Black Educator Apprenticeship Program

A multi-year apprenticeship program for black youth ages 12-19, designed to address the significant shortage of black teachers in public education

Unlocking the next generation of Black teachers

The Black Educator Apprenticeship Program (BEAP) aims to increase Black educator representation by providing aspiring teachers with hands-on experience, mentorship, and professional development. It breaks down barriers to entry, emphasizes culturally responsive teaching, and fosters a supportive community, with a goal of creating a pipeline of highly qualified Black educators. The program launched in the 2022-23 school year and works with youth from Grades 7-12.

There's a significant shortage of Black teachers! Many black students never had a black teacher

The Teacher Diversity Gap in Ontario and Toronto is larger than the gap in the United States. In the Toronto District School Board, Ontario’s largest school board, Black staff make up just 6% of the workforce.

Black students strongly benefit by having even one Black teacher

Black students with at least one Black teacher by third grade are 13% more likely to graduate high school and enroll in college. Those with two Black teachers are 32% more likely.

Here's how we're making a difference

We've engaged over 100 youth apprentices. Each year, they receive 130+ hands-on training hours via one-on-one, small group, and full classroom program delivery. 65% of participants express an interest in pursuing a career in education after 1 year, up from less than 12% at the start of the program.
